The Ivory Club Boys return to WED NITE HOP by popular demand (thanks DANCERS!) Led by guitarist Paul Mehling, the Ivory Club Boys – an offshoot of the Hot Club of San Francisco – revive legendary jazz fiddler Stuff Smith’s style and tunes. Mehling is joined by singer/guitarist Isabelle Fontaine, Clint Baker on cornet, violinist Evan Price, and string bassist Sam Rocha. Shamelessly stealing from Stuff Smith’s Onyx Club Boys, the Ivory Club Boys provide a joyous, freewheeling romp through some great old tunes like you’ve never heard them before, designed to keep the dance floor full. Hezekiah Leroy Gordon “Stuff” Smith (1909-1967), by the way, was inspired by Louis Armstrong to play jazz. He tore it up in the ’30s with such hit records as “I’se a Muggin’” and “If You’re a Viper,” was the first violinist to electrify, and later recorded with Nat “King” Cole. That style and spirit is kept alive by the Ivory Club Boys.
